Musigny Grand Cru Comte Georges de Vogüé 2017
The wine
Musigny wines get their iconic elegance from the famous red clay soil, which is less chalky than in neighbouring areas. Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé owns 7.2 hectares of the 10.77 hectares in the grand cru area. As authorised under the appellation’s decree, the property grows Chardonnay for its mythical Musigny Blanc on a plot of 0.66 hectares. It is therefore the only producer of this unique Côte de Nuits Grand Cru white. When the time came to replant these vineyards, the Domaine decided to declassify all its wines, including its Bourgogne Blanc, from the years 1994 to 2014. Musigny Blanc is a truly one-of-a-kind Chardonnay. It has the texture and concentration of top Beaune whites and the mineral potency of top Chablis wines. An absolute legend!
About the Producer Comte Georges de Vogüé
It is to the fabulous Grand Cru Musigny, of which he is the main owner, that Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé owes its world fame. Along with the AOC vineyards at Chambolle-Musigny and Bonnes Mares, the Comte de Vogüé domain owns 70% of the Musigny region. It is also the only one to produce white as the appellation decree allows it. Today, Baroness Bertrand de Ladoucette, from a long line of de Vogüés, directs the estate. In 1986 she hired well-known oenologist, François Millet, to manage the domain. He applied his philosophy of minimum intervention in the winemaking process. Ignoring market trends that encourage vineyards to produce “ready to drink” wines, his approach consists in getting the best out of each harvest and is quite the contrary. Whether the vintage promises to be exceptional or not, quality remains the priority. Since then it has been very successful and remains the most prestigious house in Chambolle-Musigny. Moreover, the domain does not hesitate to downgrade all the grapes coming from vines judged not old enough.
