IGP Côteaux du Verdon Le Lointain Myrko Tepus 2021
The wine
Le Lointain, the name of this wine, is an ode to the falcon’s flight which Charles d’Arcussia, Lord of Esparron, the village where this domain is located, wrote a book about in 1598. The falcon climbs to a high altitude to spot its pray before diving to the ground to attack it.
This cuvée is a blend mainly made from Ugni Blanc with a little Chardonnay. Both grape varieties were grown in a plot less than a hectare in size on limestone-clay soil at an altitude of 460 metres. The vines are well-cared for with no chemical substances, an approach which continues in the cellar where only the smallest amount of sulphur is tolerated. The hand-harvested grapes are pressed straight away in whole bunches, and then the juice is vinified in 350 litre oak casks. It matures for 20 months on its lees, producing a pale wine that shimmers slightly green with a delicate floral nose emphasised by a hint of smokiness. Refreshing, a great deal of elegance flows through the cuvée before a citrus fruit finish takes its place.
