Lot presentation

Château Angélus 1er Grand Cru Classé A 2006

The wine

Generally speaking, recent vintages of Angélus have been more richly coloured and concentrated than in the past, offering voluptuous aromas of black fruit, mocha and toasted oak, and have an impressive capacity to age.

About the Producer Château Angélus

Managed by Hubert de Boüard de Laforest since 1985, Angélus has belonged to the same family since the beginning of the 20th century. The château takes its name from the fact that in former times one could, at this precise location, hear the angelus being rung by the bells at the chapel in Mazerat and by the churches in Saint Martin and Saint Emilion.

The property of course has an exceptional terroir, but also demonstrates the importance of man's role in bringing out the best of the terroir: before 1980 the wines were rich and fruity, but lacking in elegance; the growing methods and vinification techniques were subsequently improved thanks to Hubert de Boüard, and as a result Angélus's quality has moved significantly ahead of its peers in Saint Emilion. In the most recent revision of the appellation's classification, in 2012, Angélus was awarded the highest possible rank of Premier Cru Class A, alongside Cheval Blanc, Ausone and Pavie. Green harvests in July, fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, ageing in new oak barrels, and bottling without filtration.
