Lot presentation

Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Brûlées Domaine René Engel - Domaine Eugénie 2002

The wine

Domaine d'Eugénie (formerly René Engel) owns 1.16 hectares of Les Brulées Premier Cru vineyards. It is a seductive Vosne-Romanée, ripe and velvety in the mouth. It exudes aromas of red berries, such as strawberry and morello cherry. This wine will require at least ten years of aging to deliver its full potential.

About the Producer Domaine d'Eugénie (René Engel)

The seven hectares of the Engel domain cover some of the most prestigious Côte de Nuits appellations: Clos Vougeot, Echezeaux, Grands Echezeaux and Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru. Philippe Engel took over from his father in 1981, and in 1982 he undertook drastic measures within the domain which was then rated among the best in Vosne-Romanée, but sadly, he died of an accidental death in 2004. The Engel domain was taken over by François Pinault in 2006, and today the Château Latour team (owned by the François Pinault group), under the guidance of Frédéric Engerer, is responsible for its development. The yields are rigorously controlled. The domain produces full-bodied and particularly racy wines, with complex aromas; their balance means that they can be cellared for a long time. René Engel, professor of oenology for 35 years at Dijon University, was an important pre-war figure for Burgundy winemaking. He was one of the founders of the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin, and not only promoted his own wines remarkably well, but also the whole of the Côte d'Or in general, until his retirement in 1949.
