The appellation area for the Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence is located on the western side of Provence's limestone region. It runs from the Durance to the Mediterranean, and from the Rhone valley in the West to Mount Sainte Victoire in the east. The second largest appellation in Provence with an area of 3,500 hectares, the vineyards of the Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence cover a compact area of 49 communes mostly in the Bouches-du-Rhône department, with a little enclave in the Var (the communes of Rians and Artigues). Most of the production is rosé (60%), but there is also a lot of red wine (35%) and a small proportion of whites (5%). The Coteaux d'Aix's red wines have a structure that enables them to age for well over ten years. Powerful and yet refined, they are supple and fruity in their early years, becoming spicier and developing gamey notes as they age.
