Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru Camille Giroud 1990
The wine
Clos de Vougeot consists of 50 hectares that are divided up into no less than 82 Burgundy winegrowers. Created at the start of the 12th century by Benedictines from Citeaux, the Clos de Vougeot vineyard has hardly changed since the 15th century, at which time a wall was built around it. The nature and quality of the wine differs considerably, depending on where it was made and by whom. It is thought that the wines coming from the highest part of the Clos (which reaches its peak at 250 metres), are mostly more generous and complex. Clos de Vougeot are are harmonious, racy and elegant wines with a deep-red colour. They are noted for their intense and extraordinary aromatic bouquet, made up of concentrated aromas of red and dark fruits (cherry, blackberry and blackcurrant), forest floor and violets and, once matured, of fur (hare belly and musk). These wines, ample, fleshy, sinewy and long-lingering on the palate, are balanced with fine and mellow tannins and a discrete acidity. The great vintages also have an impressive cellaring capacity.
