Château Climens 1er Grand Cru Classé 1988
The wine
Château Climens stands out through its strength and creaminess, developing intense aromas of citrus fruits and exotic fruits. A fantastic fortified wine, it has an impressive capacity to age for several dozen years in good vintages. It boasts the power and full-bodied aspects of a Sauternes as well as the finesse and liveliness of a Barsac.
About the Producer Château Climens
Château Climens, owned by the Lurton family since 1971, is undoubtedly one of the world's greatest fortified wines. Its vineyard stretches over 30 hectares of Sémillon. Its soil is comprised of fine gravel and red sand over a calcareous bedrock. The vines have an average age of 35 years, with annual renewal around the 3 to 4% mark. Yields here remain some of the lowest in the appellation in order to obtain unique levels of concentration. Harvest workers carefully select grapes that are rich in botrytis cinerea (Sauternais' famous noble rot). After fermentation in oak barrels, the wine is aged for two years before being bottled.
