Vivens de Durfort-Vivens 2nd Vin 1993
The wine
A Margaux second grand cru classé in the 1855 classification, Château Dufort-Vivens produces wines that are lauded by numerous critics. The Vivens cuvée is one of these. It is made from 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc, the vines of which grow in a gravelly terroir. A rarity in Bordeaux, the vineyards have been grown biodynamically since the 2011 vintage. The wine is matured in French oak barrels for 18 months with around 60% new wood. In the glass, this is a cuvée with a deep hue, and its nose brings all the richness promised by the colour. Its bouquet marries dark fruits, liquorice and notes of tobacco after a few years. Once on the palate, this is a rich wine with ripe tannins. It will pair well with a generous dish such as beef.
About the Producer Château Durfort Vivens
The quality of Durfort's wines was recognized at the end of the 18th century; Thomas Jefferson, the American ambassador and future president of the United States, placed it directly after Lafite, Latour and Margaux in his fascinating travel journals. His opinion was confirmed in the 1855 classification when it was ranked a second growth. The vineyard consists of several plots, surrounded by vines belonging to Château Margaux. For many years, the wines produced did not meet the expectations of its second growth classification. Since Gonzague Lurton is at the head of this beautiful property, the quality has undeniably increased. Since 2016, Durfort Vivens has been Demeter certified. This proves the new owners'diligence to create great wines.
