The wine
As well as being one of this estate’s great classics, this wine comes from vines aged around sixty years old. Deeply rooted in old granite soils, it has been produced using methods that respect nature. The grapes were harvested by hand, partially destemmed and then fermented with natural yeasts before macerating for several weeks in stainless steel vats. During this time, the team at the estate carried out regular punching down and pumping over, up to twice a day.
The nose of this Cornas Vieilles Vignes commands respect with its very distinguished style, showing black fruit and notes of burnt herbs refreshed by a gorgeous floral touch. The palate offers a meatier style, counter-balanced by mineral freshness. It reveals a perfect equilibrium of fruity volume and acidity, exceptional length and firm tannins.
This is a wine that has successfully spanned the decades, and so will the bottle you buy – its ageing potential is astonishing. Forget about it for a good twenty years in the cellar before serving it with game.
About the Producer Alain Voge
In 1958, Alain Voge joined his father working the small family farm and decided abandon polyculture and devote the entire land to the growing of vines. The northern Rhône appellation Cornas owes much to this winemaker who has contributed greatly to putting this unknown appellation on the map. Today, the family has vines in several appellations: Cornas (6.5 ha), Saint-Péray (4ha), Saint-Joseph and Côtes-du-Rhône (red). 13 hectares are tended to using organic and biodynamic prinipals (certified since 2013).
The property was associated with Albéric Mazoyer, the former technical directer of Chapoutier, from 2004 to 2018, and with Lionel Fraisse from 2018, who stepped in particularly after the sad passing of Alain Voge in 2020.
His Syrahs are world renowned, as are his whites and sparkling wines from Saint-Péray. The concentrated and lively wines wines can be savoured both in their youth and after ageing. A stand-out producer from the region.
