Monthélie Comtes Lafon (Domaine des) 2011

The wine

A small appellation nestled between Volnay and Meursault, Monthélie covers an area of around 130 hectares, of which only 18 hectares produce white wine. The vines are south and south-east facing on a gravelly limestone terroir covered with red clay and marl. For his own label, Dominique Lafon sources his grapes from here and vinifies them with the same level of care as he does the wines from the domain. He press whole bunches before decanting them into chilled stainless steel vats for 24 hours. After four to six days, the indigenous yeasts begin to ferment the grape and the resulting wine is later aged in the same container.
This Monthélie is golden in colour with a fragrant bouquet of white flowers, citrus fruits and sweet spices. Lively and energetic, this wine feels dense and ripe on the palate, made taut by its minerality. A wine which can be left to age for several years in the cellar and which would pair well with oven-baked fish or roast poultry.

About the Producer Comtes Lafon

There is one domain in Meursault that stands out for both its quality and resulting worldwide reputation: Domaine des Comtes Lafon. Established at the beginning of the 19th century by a wealthy amateur called Jules Lafon, the house is today directed by his great grandson, Dominique Lafon. It uses the same family traditions and covers 13 appellations. The domain has for a long time aimed to preserve the environment in its winemaking process. It now uses biodynamics and was officially classified "organic" in 1998.
