Lot presentation

Chambolle-Musigny Cuvée des Cigales Ponsot (Domaine) 2013

The wine

In 1872, William Ponsot bought a domain in Morey-Saint-Denis. Many generations have come and gone since, and the vineyard has grown. Hippolyte was the first to start bottling wine at the estate in 1932, with exports to the United States beginning in 1934. In the early 1960s, his son Jean-Marie was among the pioneers of clonal selection in Burgundy. In 1972, his wife Jacqueline inherited several parcels of Gevrey-Chambertin and Chapelle-Chambertin. The domain has remained exclusively family-run, and the different parts of the domain are owned by the children of Jean-Marie and Jacqueline Ponsot, who continue to produce wines uninfluenced by current fads and fashions. In early 2017, Laurent Ponsot announced (for personal reasons) that he would be leaving the domain he had been running for so many years, and that his sister Rose-Marie Ponsot would be taking over the reins. Laurent himself – alongside his son Clément – then took over the trading business (established in 1989) selling the wine produced from purchased grapes he had vinified himself; his intention has been to expand this business rapidly, and he retains ownership of one quarter of Domaine Ponsot's vineyards. The domain practises very late harvesting, fully implementing traditional vinification methods, without the use of new wood or any form of filtering; the result is a wine of spectacular richness.
Chambolle-Musigny Cuvée des Cigales has aromas of red berries and violets. The palate is dominated by delicateness, although it lacks nothing in structure or freshness. This wine combines power with delicateness, and makes the perfect accompaniment to dishes such as feathered game or lamb.

About the Producer Ponsot

In 1872, William Ponsot bought a domaine in Morey-Saint-Denis. Since then, several generations have followed and the vineyard has grown. Hippolyte began bottling at the domaine in 1932 and exporting to the United States in 1934. His son Jean-Marie was among the pioneers of clonal selection in Burgundy in the early 1960s. In 1972, his wife Jacqueline inherited several parcels of Gevrey-Chambertin and Chapelle-Chambertin. Today the heritage remains exclusively with the family, and the different parts of the domaine are held by Jean-Marie and Jacqueline Ponsot's children who continue to produce wines outside the fashionable phenomena. The domaine harvests very late, fully respecting traditional winemaking methods, without new wood or any filtration operation, resulting in spectacularly rich wines. In early 2017, Laurent Ponsot, who had run the domaine for many years, left the domaine (for personal reasons) and it is now his sister Rose-Marie Ponsot who has taken over.
