Strathisla Artist 12 - Legendary Distilleries - Mathéo Modol x LMDW (5 bottles and 1 unique print)

The wine

Donated by La Maison du Whisky
For the first time in its history, the Artist range has dedicated an entire collection to a single distillery. And a good one at that: Strathisla, whose whiskies have been produced on outskirts of the small town of Keith since 1786. Its historic roots and remarkable architecture have led to it frequently being cited in Scottish tourist guides as one of the most beautiful distilleries in the country, with its pagoda roofs, paved courtyard and waterwheel. The heir to expertise forged since the 18th century, Strathisla is also known for being the key element in a number of blended Scotches, including one of the world’’s favourites, Chivas. This year, however, the Artist range boldly heads in quite the opposite direction, offering five cask strength single casks distilled between 1991 and 2012, selected from some 50 samples. To illustrate this exclusive collection, La Maison du Whisky has put its trust in young artist Mathéo Modol to provide an original take on the distillery that has been photographed for decades from every angle. In June 2022, Mathéo Modol took almost a thousand photos, including these five images, all in semi-darkness and chosen for their power and radical aesthetics, far from Strathisla’’s typical rustic image. Through surprising, almost abstract compositions, these black and white photos capture the ancient Speyside distillery in a very modern light.

This lot is composed of a bottle of each the five expressions in the Artist #12 Strathisla Legendary Distilleries range, accompanied by a unique print of the five photos used to illustrate the collection’’s labels (171 x 48 cm).

About the Producer Strathisla

Scotland, Speyside. Distillery operational. Owner: Pernod Ricard

Like Longmorn and Glen Grant, Strathisla was for a long time associated with the renowned independent bottler Gordon & MacPhail, whose bottlings released with the owners' consent were often confused with the distillery's own. It was also within their vaults that the character and aromatic profile of this first-class malt was forged. A generous and complex style characterized by first and second-fill sherry cask ageing which would become extremely popular among whisky enthusiasts. This identity was abundantly explored through the vintages offered by Gordon & MacPhail, the oldest of which dates back to 1937 (the “Licensed Bottling” white label and “Connoisseurs Choice” black label). In 2004, things changed. The distillery owner, the Chivas Brothers group (Pernod Ricard), took back control and began releasing small batch official bottlings of Strathisla in the ranges Cask Strength Edition and Distillery Reserve Collection.
