Savennières Les Genêts Domaine Damien Laureau 2011
The wine
Known as the Montrachet of the Loire Valley, the Savennières is a dry white wine. Exclusively made from Chenin Blanc, it is blessed with extraordinary ageing potential. The schist and purple sandstone soil here lend it a very unusual character with an intense, powerful minerality. This is a rich, fine, extremely elegant wine that is well-balanced on the palate, with complex aromas of fruit (white peaches) and florals, developing into dried fruit notes over time. Over the past few years, semi-dry Savennnières wines that were once very popular are beginning to be produced once more. The Savennières land produces two crus: the Savennières Roche-aux-Moines and the Savennières Coulée de Serrant, which are difficult to tell apart as both are very similar in terms of character and quality. The Coulée de Serrant only extends over seven hectares and is owned by Nicolas Joly (Château de la Roche-aux-Moines). As for the Roche-aux-Moines, this estate covers a surface area of 33 ha and is owned by several owners.
