Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru Domaine Maurice Chapuis 2000
The wine
Corton-Charlemagne is the only vineyard in Burgundy with the name of two emperors: Curtis Otho, emperor of Germany, and then transformed into Courthon and then Corton, to which Carolus Magnus Charlemagne succeded. Located on the emblematic "Cortons Hill ", this Grand Cru has set up the international profile of the hill. The" Hill "or" Mountain of Cortons "is a patchwork of styles and terroirs, made up of some 500 hectares of vineyards planted with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. It brings together the villages of Ladoix, Serrigny, Aloxe-Corton and Pernand Vergelesses, between La Côte des Pierres (south of the Côte de Nuits) and Savigny-les-Beaune (north of the Côte de Beaune). The vineyard stretches between 250 and 330 meters above sea level, forming an amphitheater with no other example in the region. In addition to the Corton-Charlemagne, the "Mountain of Corton" also produces red Corton. The Corton-Charlemagne display a beautiful green and gold colour, and reach their peak after five to ten years in cellar. To the nose, aromas of fresh walnut slowly disapear for a rich and generous taste often due to the aging in barrel. This gives them also in their youth a delicate touch of honey, dried fruits or even exotic fruits.
