Bolgheri Le Macchiole DOC Paleo 2001
The wine
Paleo was created in 1989, and has changed more than any other wine over the years: before becoming a 100% Cabernet Franc, it was a traditional Bordeaux blend. The wine is macerated for 20 days and matured for 18 months in oak barrels (75% new oak). Paleo is quite simply a perfect symbol of the wine-making know-how of Bolgheri, an Etruscan Coast appellation famous for its "Super-Tuscans".
About the Producer Le Macchiole
Le Macchiole is located closed to the Tyrrhenian sea on the outskirts of Bolgheri. The name refers to the farm on which the vineyard was established in 1975. In 1981, dissatisfied with the quality of the wines his father was producing, Eugenio Campolmi decided to plant new vines. After Eugenio tragically passed away, his wife Cinzia took over the reins of the domaine, with the support of oenologist Luca D'Attoma. Wines are vinified in concrete barrels and vats, and the three grands crus produced on the domaine are single varietals – Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Syrah.
