Information
Markus Molitor took over his father's domaine in Wehlen in the heart of the Moselle region in 1984, at the age of 20, pursuing the work carried out by eight generations of his family. The vineyard spans steep slopes with gradients of up to 80%, cultivated entirely by hand, and includes some vines which are over a hundred years old. It is mostly planted with Riesling, but there is also some Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc. The grapes are picked at peak maturity and fermentation is achieved without the addition of yeasts, using only those naturally present in the grapes. Markus Molitor produces a wide range of sec, demi-sec and sweet wines which are all of very high quality, in a unique style that allows the minerality of the terroir to express itself fully.
The Riesling vines, stemming from old vines, climb on pebbly soil on small terrasses. The plots, cultivated in accordance with the principles of sustainable agriculture, nestle into the hillside, hence the name Schlossberg, which means ‘castle mountain’ in German. The hand-picked fruit is left to macerate for several hours before undergoing spontaneous fermentation triggered by native yeasts naturally present on the berries. Lastly, the cuvée is meticulously aged on lees in stainless steel vats for several months before being bottled.
The intense golden colour reveals an expressive bouquet carried by notes of lemon and apricot mingling with hints of bergamot. The rich and powerful mouth reveals a beautiful tension perfectly reflecting the soft and concentrated aromas of this exceptional terroir. This fragrant, sweet 100% Riesling can be cellared almost indefinitely.
