Information
The Roagna family owns a historic property in the village of Barbaresco in the Piedmont. It began producing dry wines circa 1880, when the region was the area of choice for northern Italian liqueur maker. The estate was extended in 1989, and now also produces Barbarescos and Barolos. It covers around 10 hectares which are split evenly between Barolo and Barbaresco vines. The Piedmont area of Langhe with its green, undulating hills and small plots with individual characteristics, is set up in a way similar to the climats of Burgundy. The delicate wines possess excellent ageing potential, continuing this comparison.
Luca, who has a diploma in oenology, made his first vintage in 2001. He is keen on long, gentle extractions which he believes are appropriate for the Nebbiolo grape variety. Sulphur is used sparingly at less than 35 mg/l, and the estate is run along organic lines, even though it is not formally certified.
Most of those who have the chance to savour Roagna's wines don't forget them and there's no doubt that Luca Roagna's reputation has long gone beyond Italy's borders. And we're here to continue spreading the word about this fantastic producer!
