Information
The Clerico domaine located in Monforte d'Alba, is one of the most highly reputed in the Barolo wine region. Domenico Clerico took over the reins from his father in 1976 and oversaw the expansion of the domaine with the acquisition of some very fine parcels. The vineyard now spans 21 hectares and produces wines which are very popular worldwide.
This cuvée is not only a true icon of Piedmont, but it is also the reason behind Domenico Clerico’s fame since the start of the 1980s. The plot Ciabot Mentin was purchased in 1982 and is named after a small stone shelter that sits amongst the vines and is similar to the ‘cabote’ in Burgundy. It is situated in the middle of the Ginestra vineyard in Monforte d'Alba, where the Nebbiolo grapes were planted in 1978. They stretch towards the east at an altitude of between 390 to 420 metres, and the terroir there is made up of clay, sand and silt, which is rich in active limestone.
The grapes are vinified using the traditional Barolo method, which includes long periods of maturation in large wooden vats. The Ciabot Mentin is deep and dark in colour with intense aromas of dark fruits, orange zest and smoke. A hint of liquorice rounds off the palette and leaves a powerful and elegant taste in the mouth, which is framed by firm, yet perfectly ripe tannins. A full-bodied and well-balanced Barolo that will age beautifully in the cellar.
