Information
Vines have been growing at Schloss Johannisberg since 1200 and Riesling vines have called it their home since the start of the 18th century. Today, the property is made up of 50 hectares that face due south. Riesling thrives here on steep, 45° slopes at an altitude of 182 metres.
Schloss Johannisberg even has its own oak forest (300 hectares), and the wines are matured in barrels made from this local wood, bringing both texture and structure to the final cuvées. Beneath the estate lies a true treasure in the form of an underground cellar housing some 25,000 bottles spanning almost three centuries – the oldest dating back to 1748!
Now owned by the Oetker family, the estate has been managed by Christian Witte since 2005. The winery has a unique architectural layout, with cellars dedicated to fermentation and ageing, where wines mature in foudres (large capacity oak tuns) and vats. Visitors are welcome to explore the château or sample its magic during a tasting session.
