Information
About the producer

In 1880 Joseph Drouhin founded the eponymous wine merchant, but it was his son, Maurice, who after the First World War, started to buy some of the good parcels around Beaune, including the famous Clos des Mouches. Maurice's nephew, Robert, continued his uncle's good work and expanded the domain in to certain prestigious terrroirs, such as Musigny, Griotte-Chambertin, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze, Bonnes Mares, Grands Échézeaux, etc. A pioneer in vinification methods, he was one of the first winemakers in Burgundy to move towards sustainable farming principles: limited fertilisers and treatments, yield management, etc. The Joseph Drouhin house has been managed by Robert Drouhin's four children since 2003. This famous house in Beaune is internationally renowned and consists of 72 hectares of vineyard, divided in to 26 ha of red and 46 ha of white. It spreads from north to south between Chablis (38 hectares), Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune (30 hectares). In 1987 the Domaine also acquired vines in Orégon.

About the wine

Domaine Joseph Drouhin is a part of one of the largest businesses in Burgundy. Still owned by the Drouhin family and managed by Véronique Drouhin, a descendant of the founder, this business, which is also a large estate of more than 80 hectares split between the Côte d'Or and Chablis, respects the environment and its soil. In fact, as the owner of large climats such as Le Montrachet, Les Grèves in Beaune, the famous Clos des Mouches and even Les Folatières in Puligny-Montrachet, the estate has never lost its status and knows how to honour the great Burgundy name. The aging process is just right, the ripeness is spot on, the vines are grown organically or are still being moved over to organic cultivation, and additives in the cellar are limited. The estate produces well-balanced wines.
This superb Les Grèves Premier Cru from Beaune is an exceptional wine, known for its great finesse which occasionally places it on the same level as Grands Crus, although it might not have the same body. This wine with the texture of taffeta has the potential to develop beautifully when aged for a few years in the bottle with careful care.
