Information
Dr. Loosen is a German estate which has been producing wine in the Mosel Valley for over 200 years. When the current owner, Ernst Loosen, assumed ownership in 1988, he soon realised the remarkable potential of ungrafted vines, rooted deep in some of the region’s finest slopes. Today, the estate is farmed organically, and produces a range of Riesling wines that spans the full spectrum of styles – from bone-dry to lusciously sweet. Six Grossen Lagen vineyards form the backbone of this world-class range: the slate-rich slopes of Bernkastel, the celestial Hänchen, the famous sundial of Wehlen, the spice-laden garden of Ürzig, the steep terraces of Erden’s Treppchen, and the revered Prälat.
At the heart of Dr. Loosen’s philosophy is rooted in a desire to let the wine convey its terroir, the depth of the vines and the character of the vintage. In short, the authenticity of a wine that is far more than just a beverage. Three key elements contribute to the exceptional quality of the estate’s wines: the Mosel’s cool climate, the mineral-rich soils of slate and volcanic origin, and the old vines – averaging 70 years in age, with some parcels reaching 120 years, ungrafted and deeply rooted.
