About the producer

In 1880 Joseph Drouhin founded the eponymous wine merchant, but it was his son, Maurice, who after the First World War, started to buy some of the good parcels around Beaune, including the famous Clos des Mouches. Maurice's nephew, Robert, continued his uncle's good work and expanded the domain in to certain prestigious terrroirs, such as Musigny, Griotte-Chambertin, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze, Bonnes Mares, Grands Échézeaux, etc. A pioneer in vinification methods, he was one of the first winemakers in Burgundy to move towards sustainable farming principles: limited fertilisers and treatments, yield management, etc. The Joseph Drouhin house has been managed by Robert Drouhin's four children since 2003. This famous house in Beaune is internationally renowned and consists of 72 hectares of vineyard, divided in to 26 ha of red and 46 ha of white. It spreads from north to south between Chablis (38 hectares), Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune (30 hectares). In 1987 the Domaine also acquired vines in Orégon.

About the wine

Marked by traditional savoir-faire and an ecological conscience, the Burgundy estate Joseph Drouhin crafts a first growth Chambolle-Musigny from a 1.3-hectare parcel defined by a complex, chalky sub-soil. Around 30 years old, the Pinot noir vines draw all their nobility and finesse from this ground. This varietal, from massal selection, also benefits from biodynamic farming, and its yields are limited. Harvested by hand and taken to the winery in small boxes, the grapes are sorted meticulously before a maceration lasting 2 to 3 weeks. Indigenous yeasts come into play for fermentation and gentle extractions are carried out to preserve the delicacy of the grape. Similarly, the wine is matured for 14 to 18 months in oak casks (20% new wood).
This wine can be enjoyed after 8 years of ageing all the way up to 25 years in the cellar. It reflects the delicate craftsmanship that went into making it. Its bright hue gives off a clear, varied, and elegant bouquet marked by notes of earth, violet, truffle, and black cherry. Its palate is pure, delicate, and structured by delicate tannins. A freshness brings it to life, however old it gets, and brings a lovely aromatic persistence.
