Information
Le Mas des Caprices was founded in 2005 thanks to the ardent desire of Pierre and Mireille Mann, then restaurateurs in Alsace, to become wine makers. They set their hearts on a 15-hectare domain in the maritime area of the Fitou appellation. Planting grape varieties such as Carignan, Grenache (Noir, Blanc and Grise), Mourvèdre and Macabeu, they crafted their first vintage in 2009 after three years spent converting to organics. Their goal is to make sharing wines that are easy to drink int heir youth alongside ambitious cuvées that will improve with age. For such a range, they use numerous different containers to mature their wines, including casks, half-barrels and quarter-muids. On an increasingly-demanding path in terms of quality and the environment, the domain was certified biodynamic in 2014.
The Retour aux sources cuvée is the expression of its schist and chalk terroir. It is a blend of Carignan, Vieux Lledoner Noir and Mourvèdre. Since 2014, the vines have been grown biodynamically and the yields are quite low. The grapes are harvested by hand. Each grape variety is matured separately for nine months in concrete vats and oak barrels. It is then put together just before bottling. This cuvée has a crimson colour and a spicy nose. Its palate is structured, elegant, and supple. Its indulgent side comes from its soft tannins and notes of dark fruit and pepper. For a food pairing, we recommend serving this cuvée with a rustic and hearty meal such as a roast with sauce. The bottle can be aged for around ten years.
