Information
Sixty years ago Antonin Faravel planted his first vineyards in the lieu-dit La Grande Bouïssière, set against the spectacular cliffs of the Dentelles de Montmirail. The property is still owned by the same family and now run by Antonin's children. It is one of the few domains to craft wines in the three iconic Southern Rhône Valley districts of Gigondas, Vacqueyras and Beaumes-de-Venise. Brothers Thierry and Gilles are well aware of how fortunate they are to own such terroir and follow the principles of organic farming. During their 25 years in the trade, they have developed their winemaking techniques, striving for flavour, freshness and tension. The wines they produce today have improved in elegance and character, and as an outcome their reputation is growing.
Practically a single-variety Grenache wine, La Font de Tonin is emblematic of what is known locally as "Gigondas de montagne". Dense, structured, and particularly fresh, it has benefited from an exceptional terroir. Grown from old vines planted on calcareous scree directly below the Dentelles de Montmirail, between 300 and 500m above sea level, it has been vinified very carefully: once destemmed, the grapes are gently crushed. They are then fermented for 33 days with daily punching down and pumping over, without fining or filtration. It is matured entirely in barrels for one year. This Gigondas is a marvellous combination of power, richness, freshness and silky texture. It is a true wine for keeping, so a certain amount of patience will be called for.
