Information
John Dewar opened a grocer’s in Perth in 1846 and began blending whisky in the 1860s. After his death, his sons John Alexander and Tommy took over the business. After being renamed John Dewar & Sons, the company’s blends went mainstream and met with great success, notably thanks to Tommy’s innovative marketing vision. Their efforts were rewarded with a Royal Warrant granted by Queen Victoria in 1893. They opened the Aberfeldy distillery in 1989 and this whisky was used as the heart of Dewar’s blends. The iconic White Label was launched the following year. After merging with James Buchanan in 1915 to form Dewar-Buchanan, the company again merged with Distillers Company Limited in 1925. After forming Diageo in 1997, the Dewar’s brands were sold to Bacardi to prevent Diageo becoming a monopoly.
