Information
Touko-Haus became the owner of Château Citran in 1987, with the objective of enhancing the quality of the wine to the highest possible level. A huge renovation programme was undertaken in both the vineyard and the winery. The neglected soil was intelligently regenerated and abandoned plots were restored to their former splendour. This property was recently acquired by the Merlot-Villars family.
Château de Citran’s 100 hectares are divided between Cabernet Sauvignon vines (around 50%), Merlot, and a small amount of Cabernet Franc. The care given to each vine depends on the location of its individual parcel. Some are grown organically and others following traditional methods. The Château’s priority is the perfect maturation of their grapes which are picked by hand at just the right moment. They are sorted for a second time in the winery, before being destemmed, pressed and then vatted for fermentation to begin. Each variety is vinified separately, allowing Eric Boissenot (head oenologist) to make the final blend in a way that best reflects the new vintage. Maturation lasts around 15 months and is carried out in oak casks (1/3 new wood). The wine has a deep, crimson hue and its nose has an impressive aromatic palette of dark fruit and spices. The palate is harmonious with perfectly balanced tannins. This cuvée will gain in complexity after 10 to 15 years of ageing.
