Languedoc | 2012 vintage
The Languedoc region suffered both from drought and hailstorms, as well as rain during the harvests, which tended to dilute grape berries in some areas. Overall, fresh, perfumed whites are very successful, whereas reds are more of a mixed bag (especially in Corbières and on the Terrasses du Larzac). The best wines are early, flavoursome, and of moderate strength. The most successful examples are from Faugères in the Minervois and the Pic Saint-Loup.
The Roussillon vineyards fared better than their neighbours. They were also affected by drought which impaired young vines more susceptible to water scarcity as their roots are less deeply embedded in the soil. However, there was less rain during the harvest and the Tramontane dried out damp areas and concentrated the juices (although it reduced yields, but you can¿t win on every front!). Generally healthy harvests and concentrated grapes mean that quality is the order of the day with well-balanced, not overly alcoholic wines. Reds are fruity, fresh and very flavoursome. Although they seem slightly more supple than usual, there is no lack of concentration. The whites are slightly less good - fresh but somewhat deficient in maturity and aromatic complexity.
