Beaujolais | 2014 vintage
In Beaujolais, more so than in other regions, the quality of a vintage is assessed by its colour. In 2014, Gamays ranged from violet to ruby in colour, evoking the excellent 2009 and 2010 vintages.
In Beaujolais, after a mild winter and a warm and dry spring (perfect flowering conditions), the region had an unsettled summer with heavy rain and moderate temperatures. The scorching heat on July 17 and 18 contributed to a 30% fall in volume from northern vineyards (Moulin à Vent and Saint-Amour)! Afterwards, the Indian summer worked its magic and helped save the vintage. The Gamays have reached perfect levels of maturity with a very good degree of acidity. The 2014 Beaujolais is intensely delicious with a crisp, fruity quality.
2014 volumes are comparable to 2013. Within the vintage there are wines that are superb to drink young and fruity (Beaujolais, Beaujolais Villages) but also wines (crus) that have enjoyed an extended élevage and will age to perfection. Of the finest, Fleurie, Moulin à Vent and Côte de Brouilly stand out.
