Pinot Noir Maison Hugel (no reserve) 2010
The wine
Well-known for its white wines, Alsace also produces a considerable quantity of fine red wines. In fact, in the Middle Ages, most of the production was red. Having nearly disappeared, Pinot Noir was reintroduced, resulting in the creation of some very elegant wines. It currently accounts for slightly less than 10% of Alsace's vines. Delicate and lacy, Alsace Pinot Noir is full-bodied, with deep flavours and crunchy red fruit when young (particularly blackcurrants and raspberries). As they age, they develop notes of game and undergrowth.
