Pomerol wines may never have been subject to an official classification, but Château l'Evangile is unarguably one of the best wines in the appellation; a classic, with perfect balance.

More info

Today, the new team harvests the grapes as late as possible, in order to obtain perfectly ripe grapes, with limited yields and ageing for 18 months in oak barrels that are 70% renewed each year. The ambition to raise l'Evangile to the appellation's front ranks seems to have been achieved: the wines have a superb richness, with a dark ruby colour and aromas of raspberries, blackberries, and sometimes liquorice; they also have an impressive capacity to age.

About the Producer Château l'Évangile

While the wines of Pomerol have never been classified, Château L’Évangile is unquestionably one of the finest wines in the appellation. Founded in the mid-18th century by the Léglise family from Libourne, the estate played a significant role in establishing the Pomerol winegrowing area, alongside other families who owned estates such as Petrus (Arnaud family), La Conseillante (Catherine Conseillant) and Trotanoy (Giraud family). Originally called Fazilleau, the estate took the name L’Evangile in the early 19th century, under the management of a lawyer named Isambert, who owned it until 1862. Acquired by Paul Chaperon, Château L’Evangile remained in the hands of his descendants, the Ducasse family, until 1990. Since that time, the team at Château Lafite Rothschild has gradually taken control of the estate. The former owners were already fully aware of the remarkable potential of this exceptional terroir, consisting of a deep, heterogeneous subsoil of gravel mixed with clay and sand. Not even the devastating frosts during the winter of 1956 could entirely destroy the vineyard of Château L’Évangile. Louis Ducasse took over the estate at this time despite its poor state, renewed the vineyard and raised it to its highest standard in just a few years. A standard that would not waver, even after his passing in 1982, as his wife took over demonstrating remarkable tenacity. Since 1990, the estate has been under the ownership of the Barons de Rothschild group, who have spared no effort or investment to ensure its continued excellence.
