Burgundy | 2002 vintage
For a vintage that didn't seem particularly encouraging a few weeks before harvesting, 2002 actually produced red and white wines of outstanding quality!
Except perhaps for the Mâconnais and Beaujolais, where the continual storms at the end of the summer incited the wine-producers to harvest before the grapes had ripened completely, which produced many thin wines of poor intensity. However, a dry and hot summer in Côte d'Or resulted in beautifully sound and hardy grapes, heralding a good vintage. But it was actually in the Yonne that the harvest was exceptional due to ideal weather conditions.
On the whole, except for a few slight signs of mould that worried the profession initially, the red wines are beautifully mature and vigorous with a remarkable mellowness. These wines are still closed, they will no doubt take several more years before opening. The whites are incredibly aromatic and rich with a superb concentration. They will be ready to drink earlier than the reds. An indisputable great wine.
