Bodega Chacra

The story of this domain sounds unbelievable. How can an Italian who tasted a wine from the United States of America decide to start the wild adventure of crafting wine in Argentina from varieties typically found in Burgundy? The answer lies in the magnificent terroir which unites the soil, climate, grape varieties and the work of the winemaker in a fascinating way.

Established in 2004 by Piero Incisa della Rocchetta, the grandson of the founder of Sassicaia, Bodega Chacra stretches across 24 hectares in the Rio Negro area of Patagonia. The name of the estate is a nod to the local culture - in Patagonia, chacra is a special piece of land perfect for growing fruit - while also referencing the vital energy centres of our body that connect us to the universe. Biodynamic methods are practised there which link the vines to the cosmos and allow them to reflect their terroir and the specific micro-climate of Mainqué. An altitude of over 200 metres as well as the currents of cool air from the Andes creates the ideal conditions for growing Pinot Noir which is the speciality of the domain. Non-grafted, old vines planted between 1932 and 1955 grow highly concentrated grapes which go on to produce elegant cuvées that show another side to Argentinian wines.
